Another Application for Trellis Shaping: PAR Reduction for DMT (OFDM) Werner Henkel, Member, IEEE, and Björn Wagner Abstract—A bound for the possible reduction of the peak-to-average ratio (PAR) dependent on the rate as well as possible practical procedures are presented. The idea of trellis shaping, originally used to minimize average transmit power in single-carrier systems, is applied to the problem of PAR reduction in multi-carrier transmission. Its impact, as a function of code rate, as well as design practicability is considered using metrics in both time and frequency domain.

A New Trellis Shaping Design for OFDM
In this paper, a novel peak-to-average power reduction method based on the trellis shaping is proposed for OFDM systems. The trellis shaping decoder is designed to control the transmitted data sequence based on the minimization of the autocorrelation sidelobe components. For this purpose, the branch metric of the decoder is devised such that the Viterbi algorithm is applicable. The overall perf...
متن کاملTrellis Coded Mapping for Peak to Average Power Reduction in Sfbc Mimo Ofdm Systems
Space frequency block code orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (SFBC-OFDM) systems has inherit drawbacks of high peak-to average power ratio (PAPR) signals, and constellation shaping with trellis is a promising approach for reducing both peak power and bit error rate of SFBC-OFDM signals. In practice, reliability will improve in SFBC-OFDM by employing coded modulation. In this work, it h...
متن کاملSpace-time coded OFDM with low PAPR
Recently the use of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems has been proposed for signaling over frequency-selective fading channels. Although various aspects of these systems have been considered in the literature, the problem of the inherent high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) is not examined. In this paper, we consider PAPR reductio...
متن کاملPSD-Constrained PAR Reduction for DMT/OFDM
Common to all DMT/OFDM systems is a large peak-to-average ratio (PAR), which can lead to low power efficiency and nonlinear distortion. Tone reservation uses unused or reserved tones to design a peak-canceling signal to lower the PAR of a transmit block. In DMT ADSL systems, the power allocated to these tones may be limited due to crosstalk issues with many users in one twisted pair bundle. Thi...
متن کاملTrellis Coding in a Discrete Multitone Modulation System
Discrete Multitone (DMT) modulation is a multicarrier technique which makes efficient use of the channel, maximizing the throughput by sending different numbers of bits on different subchannels. The number of bits on each subchannel depends on the Signal-to-Noise Ratio of the subchannel. The performance of a DMT system can be further increased by using powerful coding techniques. This paper inv...
